It’s Happening: Amex is Merging Tock into Resy This Summer

Back in 2024, American Express announced that it was purchasing the restaurant reservation service Tock from Squarespace. However, while that deal closed in October of that year, the Tock platform has remained on its own. Well, that’s about the change as Amex has revealed plans for Tock to merge into Resy (which Amex bought in 2019) — which is great news for certain American Express cardholders like myself.

According to Amex, with this update, more than 25,000 locations will join Resy (including 1,200 wineries, as they point out). That’s a pretty significant increase. For me, it means that Rest restaurants in my area will double… from two currently to four post-merger. That’s still not a lot, but I’m happy to have more options. Plus, one restaurant that’s on Tock as of now is The Order at Hotel Vandivort. Assuming it makes the jump to Resy, we’ll definitely be targeting this location for future credit uses.

Speaking of credits, as I alluded to, this merger is likely to be welcomed by several Amex cardmembers. That’s because some top cards include dining credits that can be used at Resy locations. Heck, you don’t even have to make your reservation on Resy to get the credit — the restaurant just needs to be listed on the platform, and you pay using your eligible card.

Here’s a look at which Amex cards currently have Resy credits (and how they work):

  • American Express Platinum: $100 per quarter ($400 per year)
  • American Express Gold: $50 semiannually (January through June and July through December – $100 per year)
  • American Express SkyMiles Reserve: $20 per month ($240 per year)

It’s only been a few months since the Amex Platinum added a Resy credit, so we’ve used this offer twice so far. In both cases, we chose the same one of the two locations in our area. And while we have enjoyed this Italian restaurant, I’m very excited to soon have some new options. That said, there are still a couple of questions I have.

For one, while Amex says this update is expected “this summer,” I’d love to know when it will actually be live. Second, I’m curious to see how existing Tock locations react to this news — as in, will most stay through the conversion or will some jump ship? Moreover, could we see an exodus in the months that follow the merger, should some restaurateurs prove to be unhappy with the Rest platform?

I’m probably getting a bit ahead of myself here. Rather than worry, I should just be happy that I’ll (theoretically) soon have some new places to use my quarterly dining credit. And, I suppose that, if this merger goes well, perhaps it will encourage other restaurants to join the Resy party, right? A hungry, credit-optimizing boy can dream.
