Solis is Launching Yet Another New Global WiFi Hotspot Model
Back in 2019, I purchased my first Solis (then known as Skyroam Solis) international hotspot device. Since then, though, the company has rolled out a number of new models — and that pace has really hastened over the past couple of years. That continued this month as preorders for their new Solis Tag device opened.
What’s funny is that, while I’m usually pretty on top of new Solis drops and deals, I learned about this one thanks to Instagram ads. I do follow Solis on there, so perhaps that’s why this device managed to pop up seemingly every time I went to check my Stories.
Anyway, what exactly is the Solis Tag — and how does it differ from other models? What’s unique about the Tag is that it’s USB-powered. That means that instead of needing to ensure that it’s charged and ready to go, it operates using phantom power when plugged into another device (like a phone or computer). Specifically, the Tag utilizes a USB-C plug.
Incidentally, that means that the Tag device works in the opposite way of most Solis hotposts. See, in addition to offering WiFi connection, several Solis models also double as power banks you can use to charge your device. Thus, it’s kind of funny that this version will instead take power from your device.
As for ways that Tag resembles other devices, like other Solis products, this model has global coverage and can connect to wireless data networks in more than 140 countries. Speaking of data, the Tag also includes lifetime data. However, Solis’s preorder site doesn’t explicitly lay out what this means, as it does with other devices. I’d suspect it’s the same deal — 1 GB of global data per month — but I’ll know more soon. Lastly, while Solis does now sell devices that support 5G connections, sadly, the Solis Tag is a 4G device.
Now for the price. Apparently, the Tag will retail at $69 when it officially launches. But, ahead of that, you can currently save 20%, bringing the price down to $55.20 until February 18th. Despite the downside of this only being a 4G device, I think this is a clever and affordable hotspot option that would be great as a backup — either at home or on the road. Because of that, I actually went ahead and preordered one for myself, which will join the Solis 5G that I already bring with me on trips.
