Travel Tuesday: Park MGM Las Vegas King Room Hotel Review

Over the past few years, I’ve written a few times about my stays at Park MGM. While that statement is technically true, I’ve actually stayed at NoMad — the boutique hotel that occupies the top four floors of the building (and is set for a rebrand soon, by the way). In turn, despite my numerous visits and time spent on the Park MGM property, I’d never stayed in one of their regular rooms. Well, that was until earlier this month when I was in town for CES

So, how was my stay in Park MGM proper and how did it compare to the fancier NoMad rooms? Let’s get into it — but, before we do, I do want to mention that my room was provided to me by my friend’s casino host but the opinions in this review are completely my own.

Park MGM Las Vegas entry

About Park MGM

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to Las Vegas and you’re wondering where the Park MGM is, it’s located where the Monte Carlo once stood. While the “MGM” in its name is a reference to it being owned by MGM Resort, it’s not to be confused with the nearby MGM Grand. As for the “Park” part of the name, it refers to the area just in front of the T-Mobile Arena — home to the Vegas Golden Knights.

One thing that makes the Park MGM property unique is that it is currently the only smoke-free casino on the Strip. Although most Vegas hotel rooms these days are non-smoking, smoke is still common on almost all casino floors. So, if you’re sensitive to the smell or effects of cigarette/cigar smoke, Park MGM could be a great option.

In terms of where it falls on the Strip, Park MGM is just north of New York, New York and just south of Aria. On that note, the property is connected to Aria and offers a tram service (a monorail) with stops at the Crystal Shops and Bellagio. You can also access the Las Vegas Monorail by heading over to MGM Grand or Paris/Horseshoe. This is to say that you’ll have easy access to the South Strip as well as options for working your way north during a stay at Park MGM.

Check-in

The good news is that finding the Park MGM front desk is a bit easier than NoMad’s. If you’re getting dropped off at the hotel, it will likely be just outside the lobby. However, if you’re walking over, just follow the signs for check-in.

I happened to arrive at Park MGM at around 1 a.m., so the desk wasn’t too busy. That said, something I noticed is that the check-in isn’t very large and doesn’t have very many employees. This leads me to believe that long lines could be possible when it’s busy. There do seem to be some self check-in machines to the side, though.

Conveniently, the lobby is right next to the elevator banks. In total, there are three banks, including one that doubles as the NoMad elevators. And while we’re talking elevators, I had great luck with them this time around as I rarely had to wait for a car going in either direction.

The room

When I exited the elevator on my floor, I was initially surprised to see that the layout was very similar to NoMad. Then I realized that’s because it’s in the same building so of course it does! The difference here is the color scheme and decor. In particular, I like the floral and nearly tropical theme found in the hallways, including occasion birds or butterflies painted just outside the doors.

Walking into the room itself, the first thing I noticed was the placement of the bed. Rather than have the head against a wall shared with a neighboring room, it was instead located in the middle of the room (facing the window), sharing a wall with the bathroom instead. I thought this somewhat novel placement worked well — but there was one minor downside: the television. With the TV mounted to the side wall, if you’re in bed, it’s not a great view. Luckily, that’s why the TV can be adjusted to pop out from the wall and angled toward the bed. It’s not bad, but it’s still a bit awkward.

Across from the bed were a nice chair and a round table. This was a nice feature to have since 1) I ate at least a few meals in my room and 2) there’s no desk to serve a similar function. I was also surprised to find a couch just in front of the window. In my case, this was mostly used as a place to hold my suitcase, but I did find myself sitting there a few times.

Speaking of the windows, they do come equipped with blackout curtains that worked well. But, during the day, I preferred to have them up to see out across the Strip to the M&Ms Store and other attractions. There’s also a Target across the street — but we’ll get to that in just a moment.

Heading into the bathroom, I liked the green tiled shower and liked the provided products. I also thought the stand next to the shower — which held towels, a blow dryer, and other items — was pretty cool. Otherwise though, it was a fairly standard bathroom, albeit above average, in my opinion.

Since I knocked the last Vegas hotel I stayed at (the Palazzo) for not having adequate ports near the bed, I’ll note that the situation at Park MGM is much better. In addition to there being two standard plugs above the nightstand, there were also two USB A ports. I’ll also note that I was a big fan of the little light switch that controlled the nightstand lights too.

Finally, let’s talk about the minibar — or, really, minitray. It’s not that I really need a minibar since I don’t want to pay those prices anyway, but I did find it a bit strange that there wasn’t one in the room. Instead, there were just a handful of items on a ledge near the TV. Like the regular minibars, they apparently work on a system where, once you remove the item, you’re automatically charged within a few seconds. Rather than pay for that water, however, I walked over to Target and bought a 12-pack to stay hydrated, as well as make my morning coffee.

Overall, I felt like my Park MGM room was a nice size, had some unique touches, and was pretty comfortable. And, despite noting that the lack of a minibar was odd, I suppose the lack of fridge noise was a plus. Actually, while we’re talking noise, my room remained rather quiet (aside from the A/C that seemed to run constantly but wasn’t overly loud). As always, this is more indicative of my neighbors than the property itself, but I did have a pleasant stay nonetheless.

Dining

I’ve covered the dining at Park MGM before when I reviewed NoMad. But, I’ll note again that perhaps the most popular dining pick on property is Eataly. This area is home to several quick-service stands as well as a table-service restaurant. Among the options you’ll find are pasta, sandwiches, gelato, drinks, market items, and more.

Not far from there, you’ll find my personal favorite: La La Noodle. This spot takes inspiration from several Asian cuisines and has a menu packed with tasty options (and offers take-out). Speaking of take-out, another quick and easy option is Side Betty Grill, which features American standards, such as burgers, fries, and wings. Personally, I’m a big fan of their fries and fried green beans.

One new addition that I didn’t have a chance to mention before is the Chef Truck. This indoor food truck is inspired by the Jon Favreau-directed film. The star item here is probably the appropriate named “That Famous Grilled Cheese” (if you’ve seen the movie, you know the one) but the Cubanos are also great from what I hear. Personally, I also enjoyed the Spicy Watermelon.

These are only a few of the numerous dining locations at Park MGM itself, but there are plenty of others — not to mention those at neighboring hotels and other areas. Alas, finding affordable dining nearby is challenging. But of course that’s the case for much of the Strip.

Comparing Park MGM and NoMad

So how was the “downgrade” from NoMad to Park MGM? Honestly, in terms of the room quality, it wasn’t much of a change. Granted, the vibe and theming are quite different (even though there’s some overlap), but Park didn’t feel like the step down I may have expected. At the same time, there are some amenity differences, such as NoMad offering a minibar and — much more importantly — an espresso machine in the rooms. I’d also say that NoMad’s decor is more unique and boutique while Park’s is more standard. Still, Park MGM has some great features and aesthetics of its own. Because of this, I wouldn’t sweat it too much if you don’t feel like paying extra for NoMad as Park MGM can really hold its own.

Final Thoughts on Park MGM

To be honest, I was quite surprised by Park MGM. While I knew the property overall, I wasn’t prepared to like the standard rooms as much as I did. In my head, I assumed that NoMad would be far superior — but I’m not sure that’s true. In fact, save for the absence of the espresso machine, I may even prefer Park MGM rooms (or at least some aspects of them).

Beyond the room, there are several other aspects of the Park MGM property that I love. These range from its convenient location to its smoke-free nature. Plus, with the hotel’s remodel being relatively recent, it still feels pretty new overall.

While I’m honestly not sure of the price difference between NoMad and Park MGM, I don’t think you can go wrong with either option. Ultimately, having finally stayed in the main part of this hotel, I can now declare with confidence that it’s one of my favorite properties on the Strip.
